BYD OTA (Over-The-Air) Updates

15 December 2023

Who would have thought that long after you purchase your BYD vehicle it continues evolving with the latest technology? We take pride in delivering these software updates directly to our valued customers 'over the air.'

If you're new to OTA updates, you might have a few questions about what's involved. We've gathered our most frequently asked questions to ensure you navigate BYD's Over-The-Air updates like a pro when they become available.

What is an OTA update?

From time to time, BYD provides essential software upgrades to your vehicle which improves and optimises many features and aspects of your vehicle. These updates are free, and we recommend every customer completes these updates as they become available.

How often are OTA updates?

OTA updates happen every few months, but this could change depending on the type of software update that is needed. For any major OTA updates, we will send an email detailing what is included.

When will I receive the OTA update?

We will send out an EDM to our BYD Owners database, providing details on when you can anticipate receiving the OTA announcement to your vehicle.

It’s important that you’re subscribed to the BYD Owners EDM database as this is the only way we provide detailed, in depth information about the next update. If you aren’t receiving these emails, please contact the BYD Auto NZ team at bydauto@ateco.co.nz

Alongside sending a detailed EDM, we announce the OTA update and top line details via our Official BYD Auto NZ Owners Facebook Group. We recommend joining our official group to be the first to hear about OTA announcements.

How do I install the OTA update?

Follow the on-screen prompts and refrain from any other actions (for e.g. turning on the radio, pushing buttons) until the process is complete. It is important to ensure that your vehicle remains parked throughout the entire update process. Outlined below are key instructions to follow before you begin the update:

  • We recommend completing the update at home as you cannot drive during the process and will need to have a strong wifi connection.
  • Ensure your vehicle is not charging when you wish to start this update. If the car is connected to charge, the software will NOT install.
  • Ensure remaining power is above 20%
  • If the OTA is a major update and will take longer to complete, we will mention in the EDM and the recommended charge to ensure the update is completed.

If there is anything that you are unsure about, please contact your BYD dealer for assistance.

How much are the OTA updates?

OTA updates are free for the entire life of your vehicle.

What to do if you don’t receive the update?

If you don’t receive the update, you can follow up with your closest BYD service dealer. There are a number of reasons why you may not get the update, including vehicles delivered prior to December 1st 2022 which are yet to have the new sim card replacement, or if you haven’t completed previous updates. A strong Wi-Fi connection is recommended, although the car’s cellular 4G will work as long as you are in an area with strong Spark NZ coverage. BYD strongly recommends all owners complete the OTA upgrades as they become available.

If you have any questions relating to these updates, please contact your selling BYD dealer. Should you encounter any issues our dealers are there to support you, as is our Roadside Assistance team in case of breakdown or flat 12v battery. The Roadside assistance number is 0800 293 288 and our dealers contact information can be found here.
